Now, if there is one thing that many of us can never (and I mean never!) be accused of is spending too much time on planning our careers.
How many are guilty of that last minute panic on the eve of their performance review or career planning meeting???
Okay, so you may not be one of those people but I bet that despite the time you invested you are still somewhat unsure whether you have really given this “review” the priority and focus it really deserves.
So…..you take a deep breath as you enter the meeting and wonder where this will end up? What will you have committed to and does it have anything at all to do with the kind of work you want to do or the kind of practice you want to build? If not, there is no one to blame but YOU. Last time you checked, who was in the ‘drivers seat ‘of your life?
With the start of a new decade there is no better time to take back the controls. As Stephen Covey wrote in his best selling book The 7 habits of Highly Effective People, ‘Our basic nature is to act, and not be acted upon’. Don’t take a chance…it’s time to get strategic about your career.
To help you get started here is an excellent planning guide by Mark Maraia which you can download from his website or you can go one better and get a copy of his book. [Mark Maraia is a well known legal marketing consultant and although his book and the guide are specifically targeted at lawyers - the principles have much broader application.] As you can probably tell…I’m a big fan!
And remember when it comes to your career there is no one holding you back but YOU!
